What is a Thin Client (in general terms) ?

What is SoThin Thin Client?

  • What is a Thin Client?

    • A computer or a computer program which depends heavily on some other computer (it's server) to fulfill its traditional computational roles.

      (More:  Terms and Definitions )
  • Why do we use Thin Clients?
    (versus standalone computers...)

    • Cheaper to buy or replace
    • Lower Power-Consumption
    • Lower Total-Cost-of-Ownership (TCO)
    • More robust
    • Less likely to be stolen
    • Fewer Boot Images to maintain (as they are centralised on a server)
  • SoThin Thin Client is a software application which converts an existing XP (or older) workstation into a Thin Client. The SoThin Connection Manager allows you to add local programs, Microsoft RDP/RDC, Citrix, Virtual servers / desktops and Tarantella * connections as well as creating your own custom connections. This allows you to extend the useable lifecycle of your PCs and Laptops and negates the requirement for hardware Thin Clients to be purchased when an organization decides to move to a Thin Client environment.

The SoThin Suite cuts the cost of owning a
Microsoft Network by reducing the time IT
Administrators spend on supporting Users, security
threats such as viruses, worms and Trojans.

SoThin secures local, network and removable
drives whilst preventing Users from making
              unauthorized configuration changes or installing
software adding an additional layer of security,
              preventing data theft or loss.

SoThin also allows significant power management
cost savings and hardware re-life cycles, reducing
the cost of ownership and your carbon footprint.

"Reusing a computer is 20 times more effective
at saving life-cycle energy-use than recycling"
