The revolutionary technology in the UIU allows users to create an image file that is independent of hardware. In their present form, software cloning tools such as Symantec's Ghost, Altiris' Migration Suite, PowerQuest's (now Symantec's) Drive Image Pro and others, require users to maintain a copy of their base configuration, known as an image, for each different hardware configuration in their environment. In large installations, users typically need to maintain and manage dozens or even hundreds of images.
